Les Dejo el Mar (I Leave You the Sea), was the finalist for the Mariposa Book Award, and received
third place as the best historical novel in Spanish. The novel is set during the late nineteenth
century in México and in Spain and is based on the lives of the Victorias, who gained
prominence in México’s pharmaceutical industry, and the Muguiras, Spanish immigrants who
found success trading seeds and coffee.

The braided tale of Les Dejo el Mar becomes, finally, the story of a child who weaves both families’
sagas into a shared destiny. Through the love affair of Licho Victoria and Pilar Muguira, threatened
by the prejudice and resentment of each other’s society, the book becomes a rendering of the social
tensions still prevalent in México between those who conquered and those who were subjugated.
